Okay so I have 2 boars, and I am going to get a female for breeding. I've done enough reading, & research to move to the next level.

The question I have for the other breeders out there is,
1. What is the most rewarding thing about breeding guinea pigs?
2. What is also the hardest thing about breeding guinea pigs?

Sorry that was 2 questions. But could someone answer them for me please? Thanks so much for your time...

seeing the babies just when they have been born.

Loosing a sow/babies or both.

Don't forget your boys may not live together after being used for breeding sows need to have first litter before a year old.

will you be able to find homes for the babies if you don't keep them all?

My boys are one year old, and 9 months old. They do not live together now, and won't live together in the future either. The youngest one does not like my oldest boy.

My youngest one is pretty agressive, so I think I would give him some time to calm down before I breed him with a female. But my oldest boy is very calm, lovable, and gorgeous.

I know you probably hear this alot, but the babies that I'm not keeping really do have homes. I know everyone says that, but I've got some places for them to go..

I don't want to just put 2 guinea pigs together, to create babies. I've really been in love with these delicate little creatures for awhile now. So I make sure everyone has hay 24/7, good Oxbow pellets, large cages, and fresh vegetables daily..

Can you estimate about how many times, do people lose sows/babies?

Have your boys fathered babies before?

that's good having homes for them, I could not estimate how many litters are lost it could be none or your very first litter, sows can be lost in pregnacey, be careful that she is not over weight and in good health before you breed from her.

Hi,

Ok i haven't been breeding for long at all, but i say the most rewarding thing with breeding piggys is to see the pigs grow up. Also to see how different techniques change the way your piggys look and how something can change the mood of a guinea pig. Also rasing it, i sirously find it so interesting studying them and seeing how i can give them the most comfortable life. And of course they give me the extreme pleasure of expressing their personalities no matter how hypo or layed back they are. Laughing

What is the hardest thing? Hmm i dont know, alot of people say how to find space to separate boys that have been mated. I have a technique for that so it dosen't bother me, you can either get both boys and bath them together removing the sent of the female off as they would both smell the same. Or another cheeky idea is to use vic (you know the stuff you put on yourself to clear a nose and help u breath better) Well as a slight bit to the bum area and straight away the smell goes they should get along. I have found it has worked.

I'd say the hardest thing for ME is loseing a pig Crying or Very sad it really tears me up to lose a piggy and id say breeding means loseing alot of pigs.

Hope this helped take care and good luck x
