Hi everyone I rescued a load of pregnant guinea pigs (read pregnancy for full story)

Two was unwell with skin conditions so I took them to the vet and they got treated for mites since this has got a lot worse and one passed it on to her 5 babies, I'm sure it is fungal but my vet is usless I am booked in again tomorrow to have a skin scrapping, I have been using products recormended by Chrissie at www.gorgouseguineas.co.uk but things just seem to have got wose.

Please help i have come to love these little lovely pets and dont want to lose them. i also am worried my rabbits may catch it, though it has been 7 weeks and just seems to have passed through the guinea pigs. (oh and the rabbits are Not kept with my guineas)
Thank you x

Ive just had a big drama like this with a rescue boar who was dumped on me and he had terrible fungal problems. He had almost no hair, flaky skin, massive open wounds on his back, and was fitting. About as bad as a fungal case can be.

Gorgeous guineas didn't work, and neither did dips and oral medication given by Vedra at the CCT. We went through months of working on him, nothing helped. We were at the stage where we were going to have to put him out of his misery but we tried one final thing--a cat flea medication called Program.

I had heard about it on the net, on caviesgalore.com. It had been used by members there on desperatley fungal pigs, with amazing results.

Its an unusual choice, as Program is made for cats, but this is one of the very few products that CAN be turned for use on guinea pigs.

Basically it works by breaking down cells called 'chitins' which are present in insects like fleas, and also in fungus but chitins are not present in animal cells. Therefore the drug passes through the animal's body, and does its work on fungus and fleas with no side affects.

My poor boar was cured in a week with no side affects, and made a full recovery. This was a year ago and he is doing great. He went from a wreck with wounds and no hair to a normal happy piggy Smile

I would recomend going this route. Cancel the skin scrapings, they really hurt, and if you have treated for mites and it's not that, you KNOW its fungal. Don't waste your money or put the poor pigs through it.

If you get the program, and tell me the weights of each pig you want to treat I will work out the dose for each pig for you. Its a bit complex if you haven't done it before!

I got my program online here: www.pets-megastore.com/au You want the smaller one, for cats up to 10lb, the orange-topped packet.

If you would like, visit this page for more info on the boar who was literally saved by this treatment: http://www.caviesgalore.com/forums/showthread.php?t=46431

Hi sorry to hear about your skin troubles !
sounds like it could be Mycosis (ringworm) which can now be successfully treated with a spray for Fungal infections in Rabbits and especially cavies.
it is priced at around £7.00 but worth every penny!
Made by Beaphar and called Anti- fungal.
You can also bath your Cavie in horse Anti -fungal shampoo made by Lincolne Horse products (available from most good horse stockists) you just have to let the shampoo stay on for about 5 mins but it does help .
Mild cases can also be tretaed with Tea Tree oil (just check it is 100% oil) available from chemists.

Hope you find a cure !
regards Liz Razz
