I was wondering what everyone thinks about the advertising/sale of pregnant sows?
If somebody has no intention of keeping the sow why mate her??
Re homing any animal causes a certain amount of stress, but rehoming a pregnant sow causes even more stress to both mother and babies, and is more likely to result in complications for both the sow and their young.
I feel strongly that pregnant sows should not be sold, does anyone else have views on this?? |

Yep I have loads of thought on this I brought 5 pregnant sows and 1 boar around just over 3 months ago. Not because I wanted them I kept rabbits at the time and the lady was re-homing a rabbit and brought the lot to me as a friend want the piggies. Only when they turned up they was in such a bad state my friend said no way and I paid £80 for them.
The hutches was infested with maggots, they had mites one "little scruff" was so under weight and had such bad sores that even if you touched her with the tip of your finger she had a fit.
Pole my albino littered 5 and passed the mites on to them.
I paired them all up and my friend re-homed the boar.
I have over the months had so many piggies to re-home and lost so much money getting them better in a total of well over £300 due to vet bill etc and I have let them all go to new good homes for free, as a good life for them is important!!!
So I am pround of what I did, I didnt have a clue about guinea pigs then, had babies none stop, but I really do think a good few of them would nt have made it if they didnt come to me.

You certainly did the most fantastic job for those girls and they were very fortunate to have found you.
The previous owner sounds a real nightmare!
Badly kept pregnant sows living in filth, which she was more than happy to sell.
Obviously a totally unscrupulous unpleasant selfish individual, and its people like that, that give every breeder/exhibitor a bad name.
I would love to see people like that, banned from ever keeping animals again.
Thank goodness you were there at the right time |

I have got to say I was very shocked as talking to her over the phone she told me she used to rescue!!!!! so I thought she was a lovely person.
I have her an earfull when they arrived and after when I saw just how bad it all was, My rabbit flow had poo stuck to her bum along with newspaper, guinea pig poo, and straw It took me an 2 hours to bath her to get it all off and she was VERY sore.
The lady was/IS a living joke, and why anyone would want to keep animals and let them get like that is beyond me.
The hours I spent crying over them is unreal and when I had to give polo and her babies up to a lady who is local and rescues was VERY hard she was my favorite but I just couldnt beat the mites she had and that she had passed on to her 5 babies, the 3 others got it and i got a reaction!
I have how ever kept in contact with the lady that took them along with everyone who I have re-homed a piggie or baby to.
Do you know what though, I would do it all over again lol the feeling you have helped something is lovely.
I am now taking on retired ex breeding sows xXx |

It really is so hard to understand why some people treat their animals so badly.
Nobody is forced to have an animal,so if they choose to do so, then the expectation is that it will be loved and at least all its basic requirements will be dealt with.
It is a total myth that anyone can make a profit from small animals, and all breeding should be carefully planned and properly thought through.
It is excellent that you are prepared to rehome ex breeding sows, but all breeders that breed have a responsibility to look after their own retired animals.
Keep up your good work, the piggies need you |

| Silentkissangel, I am so glad there are people like you around! I was very moved reading about your ordeal. I agree, I think it's wrong to sell pregnant sows. |
