Help Please
last wednesday one of my piggys gave birth ? i thought all was ok ?
one baby looks massive and fine which is no problem
the other baby lays down alot ? i though nothing of it at first, i thought it was weaker than the other ?
well on closer inspection ( i hate to say this but..) it seems to have 1 leg that works ?
does that make any sence ?
the back legs one is ok and the other seems a bit floppy ? the minipig doesnt like it being moved and when i felt it, it seems to be broken at the ankle ?
well ive never seen this before ? and i am worried as not only the back leg is like this but...
the front feet are well hard to explain really ?......
erm if you put both your hands infront of you and lay them on the desk so that your little finger and the side of your hands are touching the desk and then relax your hands ?
well thats what it looks like ?
the minipig is using what i could only call as his arms and legs but not its ankles and wrists ?
see i told you it was hard to explain ?
the minipig will manage to get to its mum in a swimming through sawdust kind of way ?
and its getting milk ok ? is there anything anyone can think of that i can do ?
it is only a week old and it might not live anyway ? but anything is worth a go ?
in all the years i have done this i have never seen this problem come up before ?
any help greatfully recived ? thanks _________________ Hugging a Himalayan a day, Keeps the Doctor away !!

Aww poor little thing!
Are these those huge great big baby boars that you put pics on here of? Because big babies will sometimes get squished in the uterus and then have problems with club feet or wry necks and funny movement, but then they will gradually unbend as they grow up.
Its good that he is getting milk OK, because that would be the main worry, and he will still have a good chance if his legs are genetically OK, but just got a bit bent out of shape! If it was something genetic then there might be something further wrong inside that you can't see or do anything about, but like you say, he deserves a chance!
If he was mine, I would probably try gentle massage, to train his feet back into the correct position and help the muscles gain strength that way. You do it for a short time, say 5 minutes, several times a day. Just sort of stroke and rub his legs and put them gently into the right position, and see if that helps?
Poor little piggie, give him a kiss from me!! |

I have heard massage is great for things like this , but I do think vicky is right with regards to him getting a bit squashed in birth and he might pick up , because he is feeding what is always a good sign!! Give him a hug from me... |

| Awww if one is broken it might need a little bandage for support? Use cotton wool and a sticking plaster, nothing too rigid, just for support to hold the bones still. If it is broken it might heal with a lump where the bones meet, but since he's young it will heal fast. |

Oh Dear He doesn't look very good does he?
Are his feet cold? Is he voluntarily moving or only when he has to? (indicator of pain)
He will need some acidopholus for that tummy, I can post you some if you need? Tummy upsets in babies can go really nasty really quickly so that worries me more than his feet at the moment. It shows he is under the weather.
It could be worth giving him a calcium supplement too, seeing as he is a baby and his bones are involved. Do you have any Osteocare--again can post you some?
Bless him:( Give him a kiss for me:( |

| Just thinking that since he is not a newborn anymore this should have grown out by now if it was going to. I think its a genetic/inborn thing and to be safe I wouldn't pair these parents again just in case. |

as for breeding the parents again well i wouldnt really as i promised saffire that she can retire now she has had a few litters and now she can have the rest of her life off ? heheheh she will not live with anyone apart from a boar as she picks on them ? not sure why ?
but the baby seems ok i suppose ? i keep execting it to die ? and im trying not to get attched ? which is hard ?
it must be just over a week and a half old by now ? _________________ Hugging a Himalayan a day, Keeps the Doctor away !!

His tummy's good bacteria is all out of whack and acidopholus is a good bacteria in powder form, that will settle his tummy back down again. Acidopholus is available in health food shops, in pill form, which if you unscrew the capsules you can pour out the powder. Then you mix it in a little water and syringe feed it til his tummy has settled.
Shall I post you some? pm me your address:) |

Oh Jenny, he doesn't look good does he, I am really sorry. Its so hard not to get too attached to them when you are trying to help them. I also wonder if it could be a genetic thing as he doesn't seem to be growing out of it as he might do if it was something to do with birth? Like when you have a huge baby born and it can't walk properly for a while because it has been so cramped in the Uterus?
Avipro is another good probiotic which can help get his good bacteria going again in his tummy. Best of luck with him! _________________ Coronet, Sheltie, Merino, Lunkarya & Tortoiseshell Guineapigs!
