Just seen this thread. Re doesn't have his T & W's anymore - coz I've got them!!!
Just to expain a bit about the breed, a T & W is a smooth coated tri coloured pig, the colours being Black, White and Red (not Gold). Colour is very imprortant and the red should be a good deep colour, not a wishywashy, and should carry well down to the skin.
They are a patched pig. The three colours need to be exhibited in a patchwork formation on opposite sides of the pig. If you can imagie a line drawn rom it's nose along the spine, under the bottom, along the belly and back to the nose, that is the demarcation line that the patches should be placed either side of. Each patch of colour should be as square as possible, and ideally the head should be split and not blazed like a Dutch.
So for example, if you have a patch of black on one side, the opposite patch should be Red or White.
However, in the real world getting the perfect T & W is a dream - and if you do get one, what do you call it - yep Best in Show!!!!
The nice thing about Torts is that they don't have to be perfect to show. Obvouldy the better they are the better your chances, but they don't generally get disqualified. The standard isn't as tight as it is say for the Dutch, where if a pig has a coloured toe nail on the back foot it is disqualified, even if the rest of it is perfect (got a few of those in my shed!).
The advantages of keeping Tort & Whites:
you know when a baby is born whether to keep it or not (and the babies are soo cute),
babies are easy to find homes for,
they are great breeders and fantastic Mums,
they eat ANY and EVERYTHING,
they have fantastic temperaments,
are real clowns and make great pets.
If you get a good one, groom and prepare it well, they look fantastic and often get placed inthe challenges.
Disadvantages:
known as the heartbreak breed, and are notorously hard to breed for show,
you need to breed several babies to get a good show pig, so will need an outlet for ones you aren't keeping.
other than that I can't think of any disadvantages
I should have some babies in a few months time Poppy, so contact me if you are interested. They are a very difficult breed, but also very rewarding.
