Yesterday I had to seperate one of my retired boars from the group that they lived in because he was picking on another piggy.
It was fairly late in the day so I didnt get chance to check the poor beaten up piggy out properly.
Today I have given him a complete check over and apart from alot of bites he appears to have what I can only call a prolapsed penis.
Poor little fella has it hanging out and it appears swollen and it wont simply push back in.
I have cleaned him up down there but dont want to push him about too much.
I will ring my vet on Monday morning but I was wondering if there is anything else I can do.
Please reply on here or email me direct on chivecavies@blueyonder.co.uk
Any advice would be appreciated. _________________ http://www.freewebs.com/chivecavies

extend it fully and make sure no hay or dried semen is caught round the penis inside, coat with vaseline on full length and bed on towels/vetbed till it retracts _________________ www.cheekypigs.co.uk |

Thanks. Not sure if I have any vaseline left but will get some first thing in the morning.
When I clean him, do I use just plain cool boiled water or should I put anything in it, to help against any risk of infection. _________________ http://www.freewebs.com/chivecavies |

You can put a little salt in the cleansing water to help against infection, but not too much as its a very sensitive area! (bless him poor baby)
It is probably bruised, and swollen, so it won't go back in. If it were me I would give him a bath and let it soak, and keep checking it every few hours to make sure nothing abrasive has got stuck to it while the swelling is going down. It should pop back in after a day or two I would have thought if it is only swollen, unless there is tissue damage.
I would take him off any shavings or hay bedding right away and put him on towels, and put Vaseline on it a few times a day to keep it protected. Anything that gets stuck on there is going to irritate or infect it.
poor wee man, what an embarrassing problem for him! |

I actually have a free day at home tomorrow, so I will give piggy a bath for a while and see if that helps.
He doesnt seem to be affected with his appetite which I am pleased about.
It will be a while before he goes back with his friends, he has definately been in the wars bless him.
Hes the only slate I have now, so I am hoping that we can get him sorted out.
Thanks for all the advice folks. _________________ http://www.freewebs.com/chivecavies |

Well I am really happy to say that our little boars problem has gone back.
He had a lovely bath today, just running around in the water and then I cleaned him with the aid of Vaseline.
I then applied some more vaseline and popped him back as far as I could and now tonight he looks back to normal.
I will of course keep a check on him as he did look quite swollen but I am hopeful that all will now be well. _________________ http://www.freewebs.com/chivecavies |

Yes I am so relieved. We seem to be having a week of problems at the moment.
Have been to the vets with another one tonight. _________________ http://www.freewebs.com/chivecavies |

Well he has a temperature and has a nasty snuffle/rattle when he breathes. He is also at an age now where he is starting to get impacted I think, not quite sure as everyone has said that he would be very smelly to clean out and hes not that bad.
He is now on Baytril twice a day and he also had a steriod injection.
He is having to be kept away from the other piggies just incase, although the vet was fairly sure that he has just picked up a chill.
Our main concern now is that the Baytril will clear whatever the problem is, there is a chance that the rattle when he breathes wont go completely as he has always suffered slightly from it.
They have said that if thats the case then we cant rule out a possible tumour.
So we are just having to watch him closely, give him lots of TLC and wait and see. _________________ http://www.freewebs.com/chivecavies |

Our Rolo had a similar problem with his bits, but he had a large blob of stuff from the cage stuck to it. When I (Bob) picked him up, it freaked me out a little, as I thought he was swollen. It all went back in after a clean up, and then a day later a litle vaseline helped it back in and all was fine.
Gave me a bit of a scare though. |
